CHAPTER 41

The loud sound of a horn blasted one more time. The orcs’ hard gazes searched the sky. Nath wasn’t sure what to make of it, himself. Perhaps the horn blast was supposed to scare the orcs, but it didn’t. All it did was put them on guard. Then, without warning, the orcen ranks advanced down the path, leaving behind the four orcs guarding the dragons.

Nath and Maefon exchanged a look. Keeping his silence, he shrugged. Slipping by the orcs and freeing the dragons without setting off some sort of alarm would be almost impossible. Nath reached back to draw Fang. They were orcs, and he could handle four of them, he figured.

Maefon lifted a finger and shook her head.

Nath mouthed the word What?

I have this, she mouthed back. Maefon’s hands drew intricate patterns in the air. A soft glow emanated from her hands. Suddenly, fluffy cotton balls of colorful energy grew inside her palms. She lifted up her fingers and blew. The balls of energy floated up into the air and drifted toward the orcs. Dozens of them, the size of eyeballs, blue in color, headed on a path toward the brutish men.

Seeing the balls of energy, the orcs’ dark, beady eyes grew big. They made nervous grunts. One orc poked a floating fuzzball with his spear. It stuck to the tip of the metal.

“Unh,” the orc said.

Slowly, like falling snow, the fuzzballs landed on the foursome of orcs. The arcane globes stuck to the orcs’ heads, bodies, and arms. The orcs tried to pull them away, only to have the fuzz balls stick to their fingers. One orc propped his spear up against his shoulder. He studied the fuzzball inside his hand then clapped. Zzzap! The orc’s head hair stood on end, and he collapsed.

The three remaining orcs stood with their jaws hanging. Speaking in orcen, they tried to dust the balls from one another.

Maefon whispered a word.

The orcs lit up like burning trees. Their legs buckled beneath them, and they fell to the ground.

“Now, that was clever.” Nath climbed from the bank up onto the path, where Maefon joined him. Smiling, he said, “You are just full of surprises, aren’t you?”

“I have a special talent for improvisation.” Maefon started cutting away the ropes that bound the dragons. “I’ve really missed the dragons. They are such marvelous creatures.”

Nath had his hand on the breast of one dragon. It wriggled in its bindings. Nath wanted to calm it. The yellow dragon’s scales shimmered in the light.

“Easy, sister,” he said. “We are here to help. Maefon, don’t worry about the mouth. You don’t want to take a chance that they nip you.”

“I remember. I’ve been nipped at before in Dragon Home,” she said. “Hmm… Male and female, I see. I hope they find a better place to nest this time. You don’t think the orcs have dragon eggs, do you?”

“I hope not.” Nath cut the last cords free from his dragon.

The yellow-streaked dragon, with two black stripes that ran the length of its body, stretched out his wings.
